Fitness Trackers, also known as Activity Trackers, are one of the fastest-growing product segments on the market today. Besides several major players (Fitbit, Garmin, Misfit, etc.), there is a number of newcomers with interesting products, including Chinese giants like Xiaomi and others.

The functionality of the trackers keeps growing every day – newer models offer not only built-in heart-rate monitors, but also map your runs with GPS and even nudge you to move every hour. Swimmers and surfers finally also have some options when it comes to waterproof fitness trackers.

So, how do you know which product is best for you? It’s easy. You need to decide which functionality you need in a tracker and which you can live without. We’ll walk you through each of those decisions.

Step 1

Design & Style

First thigs first – let’s decide where you will wear your tracker. Most common ways to wear a tracker are:

  • on your wrist – this is by far the most common style of fitness trackers
  • clipped to your clothes or shoelaces
  • worn as a pendant around your neck
  • under your headband
Which one is best? Well, for most people wearing a tracker on the wrist will probably be the best option for 2 primary reasons:
  1. It allows you to track your heart rate 
  2. It gives you the most options when it comes to choosing a tracker

Wrist-worn activity trackers have another added benefit of acting as a watch (provided they have a screen, of course).

If for some reason you prefer to keep your wrists clear, you do have other options, but be prepared to sacrifice some functionality. Some trackers can be clipped to your shoelaces, a belt, a pocket or a bra. They will count steps, but it will probably be less accurate than when worn on a wrist.

Overall, we suggest sticking to the traditional wrist-worn design. Some clip-on trackers can be slipped into a watchband/strap and be worn on a wrist that way. Wearing them like this at night will allow you to track your sleep.

The Screen

The next thing you need to consider is whether you need the display or not. Most trackers fall into one of the three categories:

  • fitness trackers with a display, where you can see time and your fitness metrics
  • fitness trackers with LED lights/indicators, which show your progress to your goal and may be used when a notification comes in
  • fitness trackers without a display. You would need to use an accompanying smartphone app to see your results

The major benefit of having a display is the ability to tell time and see your primary fitness metrics without having to launch an accompanying smartphone app. The cons are usually increased cost and decreased battery life, so make sure you consider what is more important for you.

LED indicators are good for when you don’t need to know time and are primarily interested in one metric only (usually the step count). A quick glimpse will usually give you an estimation of how far away you are from reaching your daily goal.

Heart-Rate Monitoring?

Heart-rate monitoring if a relatively new addition to fitness trackers, but it’s a big one. Even though athletes have been using real-time heart-rate monitoring for years, it’s mostly been done using the chest straps. While the chest straps remain a more accurate way to track your heart rate, wrist-worn activity trackers with heart-rate monitoring are becoming increasingly popular. Heart-rate monitoring provides four distinctive advantages to your fitness plan:

  • it makes it easy to see if you’re in your target heart-rate zone when you’re training
  • it allows you to track your resting heart rate (considered by many to be one of the primary health indicators) and see whether it’s going down as your fitness level goes up
  • it makes the calorie burn metric much more accurate
  • it also makes the sleep tracking way more accurate by adding your heart rate into the mix instead of relying only on movements tracked by an accelerometer

Modern trackers mostly use the process called photoplethysmography to measure your heart rate. This process involves using safe green LEDs to project light at your blood vessels to detect change in the blood flow and is considered to provide generally acceptable results. The only real downside of built-in heart-rate monitoring is that it is a major battery killer… Most HRM-enabled fitness trackers will need to be charged at least once every few days.

Waterproof

If you spend a lot of time in or around the water, you might consider getting a waterproof fitness tracker. While none trackers are technically waterproof (they all are water-resistant to a certain point) there are some options that hold on to water better than the others.

When choosing a waterproof device, look for one of the two things – either IP or ATM rating:

  • ATM stands for “atmosphere” and is used to show how well the device can handle water. A rating of 1 ATM means that a device supposedly can handle the water pressure at the depth of up to 10 meters (around 33 feet). That means that a tracker rated at 5 ATM is supposed to work well even at the 50 meters depth. Unfortunately, since all these tests have been done in ideal conditions, the numbers do not really translate to real life that well. In fact, most devices rated at 1 or even 3 ATM are not really considered swim-friendly, though you should be able to go to a shower with a 3 ATM rated band. Most swim-friendly activity trackers are rated 5 ATM or more. But it’s always a good idea to check with the manufacturer about a particular model before jumping in the water

  • IP rating is different from the ATM one in that it also measures the device’s protection level against solid objects. The rating’s been developed by International Electrotechnical Commission and is widely used for consumer electronic devices. You might have seen IP ratings before, some of the most common ones are IP58, IPX7 or IP67. The first number represents protection against solid objects, like dust, while the second shows protection against liquids. If the device’s protection against solid objects has not been officially measured (not necessarily a bad thing), you will see an X instead of the first number. An IP58 device offers “Limited protection against dust ingress (no harmful deposit)” and is “Protected against long, durable periods of immersion in water”. And a tracker rated as IP 67 would be “Totally protected against dust ingress” and “Protected against short periods of immersion in water”. You can find the full chart with explanations here

While some trackers will count the number of laps and even recognize your stroke technique, and as such can be used by swimmers during training sessions, if underwater heart-rate monitoring is what you’re after, you might have to look at proper sports watches instead.

GPS

GPS stands for Global Positioning System and its primary role is to tell your device it’s geographical position. Runners looking for accurate distance information would really benefit from using a fitness tracker with a GPS sensor built-in. Even though many activity trackers track the distance, if they don’t have a GPS sensor, they can only estimate the actual distance.

Most smartphones have a GPS-sensor inside and, when using a compatible app, will track and map your workout. While this should work for most people, if you need even more accurate data and don’t want to haul your smartphone with you on a run, take a look at activity trackers with GPS.

While generally less important, there is a number of additional things to be considered when choosing a fitness tracker:

Smartphone notifications – some fitness trackers will notify you about an incoming call by either buzzing or showing the caller ID on the screen. This can be a handy feature if your phone is somewhere in the bag and you’re afraid you might miss an important call. The downside is that your battery life will probably suffer because of the constant Bluetooth connection required.

Battery life – it varies significantly from device to device. Some trackers need to charged every day, while others feature a replaceable battery can go for months on end before needing a new one. (Obviously, the more feature-rich the tracker is, the more battery juice it usually requires, so don’t expect to find a large-screen fitness band that only requires charging every 6 months or so)

Reminders to move – we tend to spend a lot of time sitting during the day. Way too much time, to be honest. It’s a good idea to get up and move for about 5 minutes every hour. Some fitness trackers will nudge you to move at pre-defined intervals, making it less likely to forget it altogether.

Smartphone app might or might not be important for you (many people just use the tracker’s screen to see the stats they need), but if it is – make sure like the user interface and can easily find all the information you need.

A successor to the wildly popular Charge HR, Fitbit Charge 2 boasts a much larger screen, ability to connect to your phones GPS and improved mobile notifications. Sadly, it’s still not swim proof. It does come with an interchangeable band though.

Why did we choose Fitbit Charge 2?

Charge 2 is a successor of an already hugely popular and highly-rated Charge HR. With this new model Fitbit managed to keep the best parts of the previous generation, while adding some new functionality into the mix. The large screen, ability to connect to your smartphone’s GPS to map your runs and improved notifications system are all welcome additions to an already very nice device.

Don’t get us wrong, it’s not yet ideal. We wish it was waterproof and the heart rate tracking during intense exercise could be a bit more reliable. We would also like to be able to go back to a previous screen instead of having to scroll through all the screens again. You also need to bring your smartphone with you on the run, if you want to use the GPS functionality. But overall, we think you’d be hard-pressed to find another device that suits most general users just as good as Charge 2 at this price point.
